The Leland Chamber of Commerce has made the difficult decision to cancel the highly anticipated 2024 Wine and Food Festival. This beloved event, which has been a staple in the community for 35 years, will be sorely missed by residents and visitors alike.

Unfortunately, the cancellation is due to challenges in securing a venue for the festival. The Leland Chamber of Commerce has faced various obstacles, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it increasingly difficult to host the event in recent years.

The Wine and Food Festival, traditionally held in early June, has served as the primary fundraiser for the Leland Chamber of Commerce. The event's cancellation not only disrupts a longstanding tradition in Leland but also jeopardizes funding for numerous community activities and beautification projects that have become integral to the town's character and vibrancy.

Challenges in Securing a Venue

Securing a venue for the 2024 Wine and Food Festival has proven to be a significant challenge for the Leland Chamber of Commerce. The festival has not been able to take place at its usual location, the Leland Harbor, since 2019 due to harbor construction constraints and the unexpected refusal from the Harbor Commission to continue hosting the event.

The chamber explained in a statement on its website, "After a hiatus caused by COVID-19 and subsequent years of adapting to harbor construction constraints by relocating to The Leland Lodge, our hopes to return to the Leland Harbor were dashed by an unexpected refusal from the Harbor Commission to continue hosting this event. As a result, we will not be able to hold the Wine and Food Festival in 2024 due to the limited time available to find an alternative venue and the significant demands this would place on our all-volunteer organization."

Impact on Community Initiatives

The cancellation of the Wine and Food Festival not only disappoints festival-goers but also poses a threat to the funding of various community initiatives and beautification projects. Over the years, revenues from the festival have supported village beautification, Independence Day fireworks, holiday lights on Main Street, town marketing and promotion, as well as essential services like trash removal.

The Leland Chamber of Commerce stated, "These activities cost nearly $50,000 annually and have been funded through proceeds from the Wine and Food Festival and chamber memberships. We find ourselves at a critical moment, urgently needing to devise a new strategy to ensure these community initiatives can continue without the traditional revenue stream from the festival. While the festival will return in 2025, we will face a significant income gap in 2024."

GoFundMe Campaign to Support Community Initiatives

In order to compensate for the financial loss resulting from the festival's cancellation, the Leland Chamber of Commerce has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Their goal is to raise $50,000 to ensure the continuity of the community initiatives that have been supported by the Wine and Food Festival.

The chamber is deeply committed to maintaining the charm and vitality of the town. They remain optimistic and determined to find alternative solutions to support the community's needs. With the continued support of residents and businesses, Leland will overcome this challenge and eagerly await the return of the festival in 2025.
